Hillary, Mubarak it. Fuck Yeah!

    >Firstly, I agree that the USA supported certain dictators, but I also note that many countries seem to actually keep the peace longer, with a strong leader in place. Don’t get me wrong, I’m quite disappointed that President Obama has not come out strongly in favor of ‘the people of Egypt’ for democratic reform, but I do note that most Arab majority countries operate much smoother with a very strong leader in place. It may be a part of their society, after all, they’re the ones who invented ‘civilization’ especially well. Tony, might I also point out that nearly EVERYTHING about modern astronomy (azimuth, degrees of arc, and much more) was invented by Arabs between 700-1000 AD, during Europes’ “Dark Ages”. For that alone, the world should venerate them.

I know politics is a dangerous topic, and I know that tempers can flare far too easily, but I sincerely believe that everyone on this board is in favor of individual freedom, under a stable government. I am getting sick of the media pundits stating that the USA has the ‘best form of government known’… that may be technically correct, depending on who you talk to, but it must be followed with “and we’re always seeking to improve it”. Or, it SHOULD be followed thusly. I believe that Egypt must chart it’s own course, and surely, the West can express concern about radical groups like the Muslim Brotherhood taking power, but the truth is that it is their nation, their choice, their lives. If Egyptians vote for an Islamic based government, and the vote is fairly done, how on EARTH can we claim it is wrong? We don’t get to choose who leads other nations !

Yes, we supported Mubarak, and even Saddam Hussein. And yes, it has come back to bite us on the ass, more than a few times… and this is the sort of thing I am trying to point out. Diplomats tend to take the easiest, least resistance sort of route to any kind of peace… and that’s not necessarily bad, unless that least resistance brings this exact sort of problem. Who the heck can blame the US for supporting a man (and his political cronies) who promised to leave Israel alone, and concentrate on his own country and prosperity? The whole world is suffering through an economic recession/depression, not just Egypt. Mubarak has surely repressed various opposition groups, and ruled under emergency powers for nearly 30 years, both of which are enough to demand removal, tyranny and all.

But, as you pointed out, Tony, who the hell is going to replace him? These people have had a grand civilization for 6000 years… nearly all of which was under one strong leader, or another. Better the devil you know, than the devil you don’t?

  5. A gente dix assim, e depois pratica: WYSiSWYG (what you see is what you get)
Não preciso de traduzir isto, pois não ?

That’s another spirit, and we don’t drink it, just like it a lot.
