In a statement, Obama-Biden spokesman Bill Burton writes that, while Obama does not agree with the comparison of McCain’s campaign to those of segregation advocate George Wallace, he does believe that Rep. John Lewis is justified in his condemnation of “the hateful rhetoric that John McCain himself personally rebuked just last night,” as well as Palin’s assertion that the candidate “pals around with terrorists.”

Here’s the full statement: “Senator Obama does not believe that John McCain or his policy criticism is in any way comparable to George Wallace or his segregationist policies. But John Lewis was right to condemn some of the hateful rhetoric that John McCain himself personally rebuked just last night, as well as the baseless and profoundly irresponsible charges from his own running mate that the Democratic nominee for President of the United States ‘pals around with terrorists.’ As Barack Obama has said himself, the last thing we need from either party is the kind of angry, divisive rhetoric that tears us apart at a time of crisis when we desperately need to come together. That is the kind of campaign Senator Obama will continue to run in the weeks ahead,” said Obama-Biden spokesman Bill Burton.

The most revealing moment happened earlier, when she was asked about Obama’s attack on McCain’s claim that the fundamentals of the economy are sound. “Well,” Palin said, “it was an unfair attack on the verbage that Senator McCain chose to use, because the fundamentals, as he was having to explain afterwards, he means our workforce, he means the ingenuity of the American people. And of course that is strong, and that is the foundation of our economy. So that was an unfair attack there, again, based on verbage that John McCain used.” This is certainly doing rather than mere talking, and what is being done is the coinage of “verbage.” It would be hard to find a better example of the Republican disdain for words than that remarkable term, so close to garbage, so far from language.

Este artigo continua a linha de David Brooks, que defendeu Bush durante oito anos no New York Times, e que se retractou recentemente do dislate perante a perspectiva de Palin como VP. Basicamente fez marcha atrás na retórica anti-intelectual, dizendo que foi mal entendida já que apenas pretendia combater o espírito liberal das Ivy League, não era mesmo, mesmo anti-intelectual.

Essencialmente Brooks disse que tudo bem que um político abuse um bocadinho do populismo e diga que o país deve ser governado por pessoas comuns, mas outra coisa é acreditar-se mesmo que uma idiota como Palin tem competência para ser VO ou mesmo presidente.
